Eddy Curry plans to return to New York Knicks healthy and not hurt club

Eddy Curry has two clear objectives when he returns to practice Wednesday and gradually works his way back into Mike D'Antoni's rotation: Don't get hurt and don't hurt the team.
"I don't want to mess them up," Curry said late Monday after the Knicks defeated Portland for their third straight win. "I don't want to be the reason we lose the game. It's going to be touchy for me. I trust coach. He's definitely going to put me in there when I'm ready and not hurting the team."
After missing seven games with a sore left knee, Curry dressed Monday but did not play in the Knicks' 93-84 victory. The plan is to get Curry substantial practice time before he is pressed into action. And with the Knicks in a stretch during which they will play just one game over seven days (Friday at New Orleans), Curry will have an opportunity to prove he is healthy and ready to contribute.
After a 1-9 start, the Knicks are 7-15, and their next three games will be against teams with losing records. D'Antoni is committed to using an eight-man rotation dominated by veterans because the coach feels a lineup that includes Al Harrington and Larry Hughes gives the Knicks the best chance of winning.
Harrington and Hughes are in the final year of their contracts, and the Knicks will use their expiring deals to pursue an elite free agent next summer. The main reason Jared Jeffries was promoted to the starting lineup is because the Knicks are hoping to deal him and need to improve his trade value. And Jeffries is going along with the plan. He gives the Knicks energy, defense and a physical presence and is enjoying his best four-game stretch since joining the team four years ago. Curry is in the same situation as Jeffries. The Knicks are looking to trade Curry to increase their salary-cap space, which is why the veteran center will play, assuming he can stay healthy. "What, trade bait?" Curry joked with reporters. "I'm going to relish any moment I can to play. Whether they're playing me to trade me or they are playing me to win games it doesn't matter to me. I just want to be out there...although I don't want to be traded."
If Curry does play against his good friend Tyson Chandler and the Hornets, it is unlikely he will see much court time. In the four games Curry has appeared in this season, he has played a total of 46 minutes. He has also struggled to find a rhythm. Curry has made seven of 18 shots and has committed 11 turnovers.
But the key is whether Curry can stay healthy. He has played in just seven of the Knicks' last 104 games dating back to last season.
"I'm feeling great right now," Curry said. "This is the best I've felt in a long time." |
